⦿ A Huey Newton memory, Oakland, Calif

……  This probably won’t have much reference to those outside the US.

When I was an Oakland (Calif.) Police dispatcher  in the ’80’s, I’d become a supervisor of probationary trainees,  a hard and intensive undertaking.  It took a minimum of 6 months before trainees were ready to handle most aspects of busy on-air dispatching of units  to calls with the added  crunch of constant air traffic, with a critical situation possible at any time.. We had to know where everybody was at any time.. It was a long process that not every trainee succeeded at.
.
I used to think of it like juggling with 8 balls at a time. It took a certain mindset and set of skills that not everyone had, including my problem-trainee. She was always nervous to the point of missing important information from the field officers.  The bosses had moved her to  the graveyard shift where things were slower, to try to help her get her footing.    It was my job to get her good  or she’d be gone.
.
Anyway,  a thing I recalled today:  was that one night around 5 am, we  dispatched  a call of a burglary in progress  in West Oakland.  When the officers got the guy in custody,  it turned out to be Huey Newton , formerly a leader of the Black Panthers  and well-known to the Oakland Police for shooting & killing one of their own  years before.
But now the once-famous Huey was now just another crack addict burglarizing and stealing for dope money… wow. I believe this was 1986 or ’87.

Later I told my trainee– ‘you know who Huey Newton is, don’t you?.. the Black Panthers, that’s some serious shit !  You were on the radio, he heard your voice, he’s gonna come after you.’  [ not true ].
I was just messing with her  but she couldn’t even tell I was just being a smartass and she got all scared…  …hahaha.

He later had a sad, but not surprizing,  end when  he was shot & killed in a drug deal in ’89.

⦿The Driving Lesson

Long, long ago when I was in high school, and  learning to drive ::: there was a certain Saturday when my boyfriend of the the time was supposed to pick me up to go to the Renaissance Fair.. but after I’d taken a psychedelic substance in anticipation of the occasion, he phoned me to say we couldn’t go after all, because of car trouble.

So there I was, high at home.. and my dad said — ‘well then, a perfect opportunity for a driving lesson’.   A bit of panic !  Who  wants to go practice-driving with their dad when they’re high on LSD ? !  I tried begging off but he said  ‘GET IN THE CAR,  NOW!’     And so I went,  a relatively inexperienced new driver, trying to be ‘normal’ while high on acid, driving in the car with my dad. .  yikes !

But surprizingly  it went ok –I pretty much kept my mouth shut and I didn’t drive up a tree or anything!  (and by the way–on a stick-shift.)     My dad never knew I was spaced out on acid that day. . .  so  now these many years later  it’s  a funny memory…

(for info : haven’t partaken in that substance for many, many years since then)

Yeah.. it was kinda like this  !
